Another Game Maker THING

April 12, 2006 at 4:49 am (Uncategorized)

Okay, I'm Making another game, and this time, I have to make it as well as I can, AND it has to be educational.

So, I have to think of something to do, which is kind of hard when trying to concieve a game, so, I'll try and think of something. I'm probably going to do something to do with history, ancient history to be exact, probably ancient Greece or Ancient Rome or Aztecian stuff etc. Who knows? Maybe I could do a blend of everything, but that'd mean a hell of a lot of homework, and I don't really like homework, and without a complete access to the internet…

Anyway, I'm probably going to use something like mystery themes, but I still really don't know, it's kinda in developement. I'm going to use an overhead view, It'll probably be easier to make the sprites and stuff for the background. You'll probably be able to talk to people and look at things, examine etc.

I will use a test subject, who I will refer to as MC. Hopefully he will enjoy the game, however, he is very indecisive.

As of yet, I have not found a name for my game, because I haven't really defined my game yet, so, I think I'll think of a name when I have gotten pretty far in completion of the game. I could of course create a name, then change it later, but still, I haven't defined my game.

Of course, I'll be doing the usual, creating good sound effects etc.

Anyway, I'm on holidays soon, and I won't be posting for a while, unless I get the internet soon and perhaps I will…

FIRST PERSON SHOOTER

April 7, 2006 at 4:53 am (Uncategorized)

1)Provide an outline of what the video is about.

The documentary we watched in IT was about videogame violence, and how it affects teenagers and children. This particular video follows the story of a man whose teenaged son is addicted to videogames. The addiction goes to extreme levels, and results in the teenager truanting and creating other problems with his parents. The teenager’s father tries to discover more about how videogames are affecting children and teenagers, interviewing other parents and creators of videogames.

2)What would you have done if you were the teenager's parents?

Personally, if I were the teenager’s parent, I would have let him sort it out, but if that didn’t work, I would have tried to monitor my son’s purchasing habits, and, if the problem became as bad as it was on the documentary, confiscated the game, and grounded the child. It probably wouldn’t work though, so I’d act as if was really bothering me, pretend to cry and stuff, and guilt my imaginary child into giving up the videogame, or at least spending a little less time on it.

3)Is it a concern that this might happen to you or someone you know? Explain.

I’m not particularly concerned that the sort of thing that happened in the video will happen to me. Even though me and my friends play videogames, none of us go so far as to skip school to play videogames, with my one personal exception being the midnight release of the Xbox360, which still doesn’t really count as truancy, because I still went to school the next day, only a little late because I overslept. I enjoy videogames, but not to the point that it interferes with my grades at school, or anything else. Videogames are important to me, but only in the same way that the release of a particularly awaited book is. However, there are some people I know who are addicted (not nearly as much as the people in the video) to videogames, like Josh’s brother Jarred, who also likes Counter Strike. So, perhaps the problem does not lie in the videogame industry, but in the Counter Strike games. Subliminal messaging maybe…?

4) In your opinion, are videogames addictive in a dangerous way?

In my personal opinion, videogames are not addictive in a dangerous way. I find videogames to be addictive in the same way that a good book is addictive. So, I don’t find videogames dangerously addictive in anyway. Most people are able to choose when to put down a book, generally when you are tired, and the same thing goes for videogames. There are however extremes, as there are in any case, like people who workout too much, people who eat too much, people who eat too little… the list goes on forever. So, in conlusion, videogames are not addictive, they’re just way too much fun.

Problem 11

March 31, 2006 at 3:29 am (Game Maker, Uncategorized)

Push a rock

Okay, another one of these thingummyjigs. This one, you have to push a rock around, n'stuff.

Sprite: sprStatue
Solid: true
Visible: true
Depth: 0
Persistent: false
Parent: no parent

Mask: same as sprite

This particular event is to move the statue, and make sure that the statue only moves if there is nothing in its way.

Collision Event with object objCharacter:

for all objCharacter: if expression direction=0 is true

if relative position (24,0) is collision free for Only solid objects

Sprite: sprCharacter
Solid: true
Visible: true
Depth: 0
Persistent: false
Parent: no parent

Mask: same as sprite

Okay, This Object is the thing that pushes the block around, and does basically everything.

The first event is to tell whoever is playing how to use the game.

Create Event:

display message: Use the Imp's Psychic powers to float around an push around the statue.

These following two events are movement events, making the character move.

Key Press Event for Right Key:

set speed to 3 and direction to 0

Key Release Event for Right Key:

start moving in directions 000010000 with speed set to 0

I needed absolutely no help for this one, I'm getting quite independent.

More on 360!!!!!

March 28, 2006 at 12:24 am (Off topic, Uncategorized)

I got OblIVion on the weekend.

It is fully sick, awesome, super cool, wicked nice, all of the above, plus more.

So, I've been stuck with playing the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for some time now, but since I got the 360, I decided I need a good RPG, and I got one. So far I've gotten, like half of the achievements in OblIVion, which means I've got more than 500 gamer points, which means I'm well on the way at being incredibly good.

Also on the weekend, my friends came round and we played Perfect Dark 0, getting me even more gamer points, but I don't play Perfect Dark that often, so any gamer pints I get from it is awsome, merely a bonus.

I've yet to ask my brother if he can play multiplayer with me, as you get to choose two sign ins when you play multiplayer, which means I can get even more gamer points, as will my brother.

I'm way ahead of my brother when it comes to gamer points. I've got like 600+, easily beating my brother who is on like 200-. I probably have more gamer points because i'm better at the games Ilike than he is at the games he likes.

Anyway, I've found out that I'm getting broadband very soon, maybe within a week. The only problem is that I have to pay for it. No problem. The internet will suffice for entertainment. The Internet will mean I can get Xbox live, which means I'll have to spend even more, and then buying one of the the game I want to get (Final Fantasy XI, which is ONLY online), and then follow that money with even more money for the players I create on that. The last two will probably be cheapest, allowing me to  still save enough money for later this year. I'll manage.

Anyway, goodpies everyone!

Xbox 360!!!!!!

March 24, 2006 at 3:56 am (Off topic, Uncategorized)

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finally got it!

Finally! The Xbox 360 is AWESOME! There is a ranking system called gamer points, and I currently have ten. i should have at least 35 in about 1 hour, Cos I’ve got a combo coming up that needs completion on one of the games on the harddrive.

My brother’s got 20 gamer points at the moment, but I’ll beat him soon. I’m better than him, and I can’t wait to prove it.

Soccer Extension, In other words, Problem 6.1

March 24, 2006 at 3:51 am (Game Maker, Uncategorized)

This Blog is about how to make the problem 6 easier to understand, and easier to shoot for goal. Using this kind of configuration is slightly easier, and allows you to do more.

(This first object is to sit there and do nothing, except cause the ball to bounce back to the start.)

Sprite: sprWall

Solid: true
Visible: true
Depth: 0
Persistent: false
Parent:
Mask:
(this next object does everything, making it do everything, jump to the start etc. You'll see)

Sprite: sprball

Solid: false
Visible: true
Depth: 0
Persistent: false
Parent:
Mask:

(This event is a long winded event, which is to make sure that if the ball leaves via a particular way, which is up in this one, the points go up by 1)

Step Event:

if expression y smallerthan 0 is true

jump to the start position

start moving in directions 000010000 with speed set to 0

set the score relative to 1

(This event is to make the ball bounce against walls)

Collision Event with object objWall:

bounce precisely against solid objects

(This event is to make sure that the ball doesn't cause points to pile up [ie give lots of point for nothing] when the ball goes outside via the north ( y smallerthan 0 ) and to get the ball back at the beginning when the ball is out the room)

Other Event: Outside Room:

start moving in directions 000010000 with speed set to 0

jump to the start position

(The following events are to enable two types of shooting for goal when you press either the 8 button or the 5 button on the keypad [NUMLOCk off!]. The one with the numbers 60+random(60) is called "accurate shooting" and has a narrow shooting range[60 degrees]. The other one is called "sloppy shooting" and has a wide shooting range [90 degrees])

Key Press Event for Keypad 5 Key:

if expression speed=0 is true

set speed to 5 and direction to 45+random(90)

Key Press Event for Keypad 8 Key:

if expression speed=0 is true

set speed to 10 and direction to 60+random(60)

Also, If you're looking for apicture of this in action, view my older post, Problem 6.

this whole problem was easy, with the help of the sheet that the teach. gave me. So, tehnically the teach. helped me.

More Xbox 360 plus other stuff. Which means a tip on how to make an object move around.

March 22, 2006 at 4:17 am (Game Maker, Off topic, Uncategorized)

Okay.

Tonight’s the night. there’s a midnight release, and I’m going to go. I can’t wait. i think I might miss a little of school, however, I do have a test tomorrow, so I do have to think about it.

Anyway, I’m going to tell you how to do something else with gamemaker.

I’m going to tell you how to make a creature walk around in a circle.

First, A sprite would help.

Then, create an object with that sprite.

In the [create] event, set alarm2 for an amount of time (something like I dunno 90 steps), and set the direction to up (or 90) Also, set the speed to something reasonable like 5.

Then, In the [alarm2] event, change the direction to either left or right (or 0/180) , and set the next alarm (alarm3) for the same amount of time as the previous one. Also keep the speed the same.

In [alarm3] event, change the direction to down (270) and keep the speed the same. Set alarm4 to the same amount of time as the previous one.

In [alarm4] event, change the direction again to the last remaining direction which would left if you chose right first, and right if if you chose left first. Keep the speed constant. Then, set alarm1 (ahh, you think, there it is!) to the same as the ones before it.

Finally, in alarm 1, copy tyhe evnts you had in the create event, and paste them. This should make an eternal loop that causes the object to go in a square forever. And that’s a simple example of how to use alarms.

Okay, Hope that helps you make… I dunno, some sort of game.

How to make a Rain simulator on gamemaker.

March 21, 2006 at 12:23 am (Game Maker, Off topic, Uncategorized)

Okay.

Once when I was totally bored, I decided to make a rain simulator. So, I decided to tell you how to make it. It’s really quite simple. First, all you need is a rain sound effect, you’re likely to have one somewhere on your harddrive if you play games like morrowind or something.

You may also want something like thunder and a dripping sound effect, for background purposes.

Create an object with the event [create] then add the event [play sound (insert title of rain sound) yes looping.]

That takes care of the rain.

Now for background effects, you need an alarm. Set an alarm in the create event to a random number (make it high, you don’t want the sound straight away), and add the event [Alarm1] and add the action [play sound (insert title of drip or thunder) no looping] Then sett the alarm 1 again, so it’ll go off again later, set it to something like [random(something fairly high)]

It’s a good way to waste time and get to sleep easier as well.

You could also probably use it to make a cool game that takes up a lot of memory. With the alarms, you could create objects like lightning that destroy themself after a few seconds.
